Meal, Ready to Eat

MRE contents You may have heard of MREs, or Meals Ready-to-Eat.  The most frequent users of MREs are members of the military, who eat them while deployed.  They are ideal because they take up very little space and last several years before spoiling. The food is all pre-cooked, put into a plastic pouch, and the pouch is sealed.  Once it’s sealed, it’s heated for sterilization purposes.  Because the food has been sealed and heated, bacteria cannot get in and spoil the food. Each MRE provides around 1,200 calories and can be eaten for up to 21 days straight.  They may not be the most ideal meals, but they do provide nutrition when traditional eating facilities are unavailable. A Real American Hero

Colonel Bob Howard (1939 – 2009) was one of the most decorated United States Army Soldiers in modern times.  He served our country for over 50 years, serving 5 tours of duty in Vietnam and numerous other tours throughout his years. Col. Howard was wounded 14 times in a 54 month period, which contributed to his numerous awards from the military.  He received 8 Purple Hearts, 4 Bronze Stars, several Silver Stars, and was nominated for the Medal of Honor on three separate occasions. Despite being nominated three times, individuals can only receive the Medal of Honor once during their lives.  Col. Marines Volunteer at Cinderella Ball

The House, Inc Student Leadership Center in Virginia has made it a point to host a yearly prom for those students who are disabled or are fighting life threatening illnesses.  Called A Cinderella Ball, it provides a unique opportunity for students who are often sidelined in social activities to have their very own fairy tale. This past year, 40 United States Marines from nearby Quantico Marine Base volunteered to escort the guests into the dance and provide a ceremonial sword arch.  This undoubtedly made the night that much more special for the kids who attended.
