Just a few short years ago, it seemed like we were hearing reports of pirates hijacking ships near Africa almost on a daily basis. Of the hundreds of ships hijacked, one story in particular always sticks out.
One night shortly after midnight in April 2010, Somali pirates saw what they thought was a large cargo vessel in the Indian Ocean. Knowing that large ships typically allow for a larger ransom, the pirates decided this ship would be their next target. They fired on the ship and attempted to board the vessel. Unfortunately for the pirates, the ship they fired on was actually USS Nicholas, a United States Navy frigate. The Navy returned fire on the pirate ship, completely disabling it. Sailors then boarded the disabled ship and arrested the three pirates.
The arrested pirates led the Navy to their “mothership”, which resulted in the arrest of more pirates and the confiscation of fuel and weapons. All of the pirates were brought back to the United States, where they stood trial for piracy in March 2011. All five men were found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.
This incident sent a clear message to the world: it’s probably not wise to mess with the United States military! American Warehouse Systems is proud to support all branches of our military. God Bless America!
