On October 13th, the United States Navy will celebrate its 237th birthday. The mission of the Navy is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas.
Founded in 1775 to fight the British forces, the Navy has transformed drastically over the years. The original Navy, called the Continental Navy, consisted of 7 ships and was tasked with intercepting British supply ships during the Revolutionary War. It achieved moderate success, capturing many British vessels, but ended up losing 24 of its own vessels. After the resolution of the War, the Navy was essentially disbanded.
After a decade-long period without a Naval force the United States Congress ordered the construction of 6 vessels, effectively creating the Navy as we know it today. The Navy became critical to the defense of the United States, since the only mode of trans-Atlantic or trans-Pacific transportation was by sea.
Today’s Navy is drastically different from 200 years ago. Over 300,000 men and women are currently enlisted as active duty sailors. The Navy has almost 300 ships to its name and owns over 3,700 aircraft, allowing it to be very mobile and forceful.
American Warehouse Systems is very proud of our Navy. Happy birthday!
